Kenton County seeks 2026 nominations for renamed Pioneer Awards

Kenton County is once again seeking nominations for its annual award recognizing incredible community leaders. This year, the longtime Pioneer Awards are taking on a new name, honoring the legacy of Commissioner Dr. Jon Draud.

Beginning in 2026, the Dr. Jon Draud Pioneer Awards will recognize Kenton County residents who have demonstrated outstanding service to the community and exemplify the highest standards of personal integrity. The award reflects the principles of servant leadership and deep community awareness that defined Dr. Draud’s career in Kenton County public service.

Draud, 87, has served on the Kenton County Fiscal Court since 2010. A lifelong resident of the region, Draud’s career has been defined by decades of service in education and government.

Before joining the Fiscal Court, Draud spent more than 50 years in public education, serving as a teacher, principal and superintendent. He also held the position of Kentucky Commissioner of Education and has been widely recognized for his contributions to both the community and the Commonwealth. His public service also includes time on the Crestview Hills City Council and in the Kentucky House of Representatives.

In January, he announced his intention to not seek re-election to the Fiscal Court. Renaming the Pioneer Awards in his honor recognizes his lasting impact on the County and his commitment to residents through years of leadership, advocacy and public service.

Nominations are due by Friday, March 13, 2026. A committee composed of community leaders will review all submissions, identify deserving individuals and submit their recommendations to the Kenton County Fiscal Court.

Honorees will be announced in April.

Once approved, honorees will be recognized at a Kenton County Fiscal Court meeting, as well as in print and on social media.

Nominations can be submitted through the Kenton County website here. Current elected officials are not eligible for recognition.

Since the program’s inception in 2018, there have been 31 Pioneer Award honorees. The 2025 honorees were Ralph Dusing, Jo Martin and Martin Butler. To learn more about previous honorees, click here.
