Kenton County Government Center and Independence Courthouse Closed to the Public

This page will be updated with service changes. Last update: 05/14/2020 

Due to the growing public health impacts of the COVID-19 (Coronavirus), the Independence Courthouse (5272 Madison Pike, Independence, KY) and the Kenton County Government Center (1840 Simon Kenton Way, Covington, KY) are closed to the public.

Kenton County Clerk’s Office

The Kenton County Clerk’s has introduced a secured DROP BOX at the Kenton County Government Center in Covington (1840 Simon Kenton Way). The marked box stands to the left of the entrance doors. Although the secured box is monitored by video 24 hours a day, the Clerk’s Office cannot be responsible for CASH put into the DROP BOX. Items should be in a sealed envelope marked to the proper office’s attention. For example: "Auto Department" or "Voter Registration" or "Real Estate Department". Please include a contact telephone number in case the office has questions.

RENEWING CAR TAGS:

  • Option 1: If you are paying by check or cash, please mail- in your renewal to:

    Mail-in renewals should include the prior year registration receipt, proof of insurance which has an effective date within the last 45 days, phone number, and payment.

  • Option 2: If you are paying by check you can put your renewal in the drop off box located near the front doors of 1840 Simon Kenton Way, Covington, KY.

    Drop off renewals should include the prior year registration receipt, proof of insurance which has an effective date within the last 45 days, phone number, and payment. If you do leave a cash payment, it must be for the exact amount.  We caution leaving cash in the drop box.

  • Option 3: Use the online renewal. You will need a credit card to process this payment.

  • Option 4: Call 859-392-1602.  You will need a credit card to process this payment

TRANSFER OF A CAR:

IN-STATE PURCHASE OF A CARIn-state individual to individual car transfers can be accomplished by calling the Auto Department at 859-392-1652 so a deputy clerk can review the paperwork and give instructions on how to deliver the transfer paperwork to the office for processing.  The Deputy Clerk may need to contact you by some form of video conferencing if they need to review the paperwork.

OUT OF STATE PURCHASE OF A CAR: Individuals that purchased a vehicle from out of state will first need to have an inspection.  Make appointment by calling the Kenton County Sheriff’s office at 859-392-1800.Once the inspection is complete then contact the Auto Department at 859-392-1652 so a deputy clerk can review the paperwork and give instructions on how to deliver the transfer paperwork to the office for processing.

HANDICAP PLACARD:

For new placards or renewal of placards, you must have the signed and notarized Handicap Placard form.  You can either mail the form or put it in the drop off box located near the front doors of 1840 Simon Kenton Way, Covington, KY.

REAL ESTATE DEPARTMENT

RECORD ROOM: 

The record room at the Covington location is closed. To access records from 1991 forward online, use Kenton DeedsFor PVA data use KCOR.

NOTARY LICENSES

As of January 1, 2020, all notary publics must have a $1,000 insurance bond. Once you have the bond you can send the bond and a check for $19.00 to the Kenton County Clerk’s office. You can mail it to Kenton County Clerk, P.O. Box 1109, Covington, KY 41011 or put in the drop off box located near the front doors of 1840 Simon Kenton Way, Covington, KY.

Please include an e-mail address and phone number so the County Clerk can contact you to finalize the notary.

MARRIAGE LICENSES:

Marriage license application is located online.   Please fill out this form and send a $50.00 check to the Kenton County Clerk’s office. You can mail it to Kenton County Clerk, P.O. Box 1109, Covington, KY 41011 or put in the drop off box located near the front doors of 1840 Simon Kenton Way, Covington, KY.  Please make sure that there is a phone number on the application so the County Clerk can call you to set up an appointment for finalizing the marriage license.  If you have any questions please call (859) 392-1650.

COPIES OF MARRIAGE LICENSE:

If you need a copy or certified copy of a marriage license, please send your request to the address listed above. If you need a certified copy then please include a $5.00 check or money order to process this request.  You can also request a certified copy over the phone. You will need a credit card for this process.

PERMANENT RECORDS, REAL ESTATE: 

Document recording may be submitted by mail at the address above or be put in the drop box near the front doors of 1840 Simon Kenton Way. 

DELINQUENT TAXES:  

Customers who need to pay any tax bill that is owed prior to 2019 can call (859) 392-1650 and pay them over the phone with use of a credit card.

ELECTIONS AND VOTER REGISTRATION:

If you need to update your voter registration, you may do so online.  You can also download a voter registration card from the Secretary of State’s website or on the clerk’s website.

INFORMATION FOR JUNE 23, 2020 PRIMARY

Until the State Board of Elections portal is available, Kenton County voters can request their absentee ballot by going online. Voters can also call the voter registration office at 859-392-1620.

On the Kenton County primary ballot there are no non-partisan races. The ballot only has democratic and republican races on it.

Kenton County Sheriff’s Office

PROPERTY OR TANGIBLE TAX BILLS

The April 15th deadline for transferring the 2019 property tax bills from the sheriff’s office to the county clerk’s office will be extended by 30 days. The new deadline for the transfer will be the close of business on Friday, May 15th. At the end of that extension period, the Finance Cabinet and Department of Revenue officials will reevaluate the progress made during this emergency declaration and a determination will be made at that time regarding whether or not an additional extension of time is needed.

To pay 2019 property or tangible tax bills, please use the online website and pay via credit card. Checks may also be mailed for payment to Kenton County Sheriff, P.O Box 188070, Erlanger, KY 41018.  Postmarks of May 15, 2020 will be honored for the due amount shown for the Penalty 2 amount.

Collections for 2019 Kenton County tax bills at every Heritage Bank branch location effective Tuesday, March 17th have been reopened.  A COPY OF THE TAX BILL WILL NEED TO BE PRESENTED.  Heritage branches will accept Penalty 2 due amount thru the end of business day May 15, 2020.

VEHICLE INSPECTIONS IN COVINGTON

Starting Wednesday, April 22nd we will begin doing virtual vehicle inspections at our Covington location (1840 Simon Kenton Way).  If the individual is not able to complete a virtual inspection we do have a secondary procedure. Contact the Sheriff’s Office by phone (859-392-1800) for more information.

SCREENING CALLS

Personnel in the ADMINISTRATIVE DIVISION will be taking telephone calls in order to take information, especially valid phone numbers and to pre-screen for virtual inspection options.

OTHER SERVICES

Other processes pertaining to court process paperwork, such as mental health pickups, or domestic service of process please call (859) 392-1800 during office scheduled hours. At this time the office is limiting person to person exchanges pertaining to Carry Concealed Deadly Weapons (CCDW) Licenses.  Please call (859) 392-1800 during office scheduled hours for additional options. CCDW renewals, if possible, should be handled online.

Business Services

Kenton County Fiscal Court and partnering cities have extended both the filing and payment of the Net Profit / Gross Receipts Business Returns that were originally due on April 15, 2020.  The filing deadline for these returns have been extended to July 15, 2020 without penalty or interest.  All Kenton County Occupational Licenses with an expiration date of April 15, 2020 will now have that expiration date extended to July 15, 2020.  The License should be renewed on the return as normal. 

This extension applies to the Business Net Profit / Gross Receipts Return only and does not include Quarterly Payroll Withholding returns and payments.  Quarterly Payroll Withholdings Returns and payments are due at the normal filing dates.

County Attorney & Child Support

  • In conjunction with the orders issued by the Kentucky Supreme Court, all Pre-Trial, Bench Trial, Jury Trial, and Guardianship dockets scheduled in Kenton County District Court between March 16, 2020 and May 1, 2020 have been CANCELLED and will be rescheduled.
  • If you are seeking an EPO/IPO please go to the Kenton County Justice Center located at 230 Madison Avenue in Covington. While the Justice Center is closed to the public, applications for EPO/IPOs are still being accepted.
  • If you are seeking information on a county tax bill, please email us for assistance.
  • If you have received postcard about the County Attorney Traffic Safety Program and wish to enroll, please email us.
  •  For emergency guardianships, Casey’s Law, and mental health involuntary hospitalizations please call the office at 859-491-0600 or contact us by filling out the “contact us” form available online.

  • Child support is currently suspending pre-trial conferences, in-house appointments, and paternity testing. Please contact the office at (859) 491-4114. Child support dockets between March 16, 2020 and May 1, 2020 are currently CANCELLED and will be re-scheduled at a later date. The Kentucky Child Support website can be accessed here Online access to your account can be set up. You will need a personal identification number (PIN) to get started. Please contact the child support office at (859) 491-4114 and your PIN number will be mailed to you. Please note that your PIN number is not the same thing as your case (IV-D number). Driver’s License

The Governor has closed driver’s license offices. There will be a 90-day extension for all KY Driver’s licenses that are set to expire. All driver testing has been cancelled.
