Southern Ohio Correctional Facility – Lucasville, OH

 

General Information

There are two schools across the street from the prison.  The staff can look outside and see Valley Elementary School and Valley High School.  The middle school is approximately 500 ft away and can also be seen from the prison.  Valley Elementary and High School were built in 1993-1994.  The middle school was built in 1959.  The Valley School District has 1,200 students from K-12.  Valley Local School District has three schools: Valley Elementary School (K-4), Valley Middle School (5-8) and Valley High School (9-12). 

 

Additional Information

The superintendent, Paul Miller, sits on the Community Advisor Board for the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility which allows the two entities to stay in frequent contact.  Also the school district is hooked up to the correctional facilities alarm system.  Each administrator has a device sitting on his/her desk to notify them of an event or drill/test.  Mr. Miller said, "The public doesn't even think about it anymore," referring to the school being so close to a maximum security prison."
