Concealed Weapons Permit

Permits to carry concealed weapons are available through the Office of the Kenton County Sheriff. Applications are available at both the Covington and Independence county buildings.

Qualifications required to obtain a license to carry a concealed and deadly weapon

  • Applicant must be a resident of Kentucky for at least six months prior to filing of the application;
  • Applicant must be 21 years of age or older;
  • Applicant must not be ineligible to carry a firearm pursuant to 18 USC 922(g) or KRS 527.040;
  • Applicant must not have been committed to a state or federal facility for abuse of a controlled substance or convicted of a misdemeanor related to a controlled substance within a 3-year period proceeding the date the application was submitted;
  • Applicant must not have chronically and habitually used alcoholic beverages and must not have had two or more DUI convictions within a three-year period proceeding the date the application was submitted;
  • Applicant must demonstrate competence with a firearm;
  • Applicant must not have been adjudicated as incompetent or must have waited three years from the date their competency was restored by a court order and must not have been involuntarily committed to a mental institution unless certified by a psychiatrist not to have suffered from a disability for a period of three years.

 

What is needed to apply for CCDW License?

  1. Certification for completion of firearms training.
  2. Driver's license.
  3. Application - available in sheriff's office.
  4. Photograph (not digital or computer generated picture).  Photograph can be done at Kenton County Sheriff's Office.
  5. Check or money order for $40.00 made out to KSP and $20.00 made out to Kenton County Sheriff's Office.
  6. Signed CCDW license application - citizen affidavit.

 

What is needed for renewal of CCDW license?

  1. Notice of renewal from the Kentucky State Police - CCDW Analyst.
    Signed in the presence of Sheriff's Office.
  2. Photograph (no digital or computer generated picture).  Photograph can be done at Kenton County Sheriff's Office.
  3. Driver's license.
  4. Renewal fee $60.00 (when applicable).
    Check or money order for $40.00 made out to KSP and $20.00 made out to Kenton County Sheriff's Office.
  5. Failure to renew on or before expiration date required to pay a late fee.  Check or money order for $55.00 payable to KSP and $20.00 check to Kenton County Sheriff's Office.
  6. Signed affidavit for renewal of license.

 

Lost or stolen CCDW license

  1. Report to Kenton County Sheriff's Office to fill out a replacement form.
  2. $15.00 fee - Check/money order payable to Kentucky State Police

 

What do I do if my name or address changed?

  1. Fill out the form at the Kenton County Sheriff's Office.  (If not completed, renewal notices are not forwarded.)

The application and other correspondence will be sent to the Kentucky State Police within five working days. The Kentucky State Police notifies applicants by mail.

 

You may not carry a concealed firearm or other deadly weapon in the following places:

  • Sheriffs Office or Police Station
  • Detention Facility, Prison or Jail
  • Courthouse (Court of Justice, courtroom or court proceeding)
    County, Municipal or special district governing body meetings.
    General Assembly session, including committee meetings.
  • Businesses which dispense beer or other alcoholic beverages for consumption. (Exception of restaurants receiving 50% of sales from food purchases.)
  • Elementary or Secondary school facilities (without the consent of school authorities).
    Child-caring facilities, day care centers, or any certified family child care home.
  • Areas within airport where restricted access is controlled by the inspection of person or property.
  • Church, synagogue, house of worship or other property owned, leased or otherwise used or operated by a religious organization.
  • Any place where federal law prohibits the carrying of a firearm.
  • Any areas leased or controlled by a state, city, county or urban-county government where lawfully posted.

 


Highlights

2007 Delinquent Tax Bills Sale


The Sheriff's Tax Bill Sale was conducted on April 1, 2008.  Due to the total amount of the offers, the bills have been forwarded to the Finance Cabinet.  Any questions about how to redeem a bill sold to the State should be directed to the Clerk's Office at 859/ 392-1650
