Geocaching

August 19, 2006

Each year, Kenton County Parks & Recreation partners with the (Ohio, Indiana, and Kentucky) OKI Geocachers to present an introduction to the growing outdoor hobby of Geocaching.  It's free!  This year, the program will be held begin in Shelterhouse 1 at Pioneer Park, begin at 9:00 am, and last a couple of hours.

Geocaching is something like searching for hidden treasure!  Caches are hidden in various locations and cachers use GPS, or Global Positioning Systems, equipment and physical coordinates (latitude and longitude) posted on the World Wide Web to pinpoint caches.  For more about Geocaching, visit http://www.geocaching.com or the OKI Cachers site at http://www.okic.org.

Following the introductory portion of the program, we will split up with seasoned cachers and hit the trail, so dress for an outdoor walk in the park.  "Cache In, Trash Out" is the cachers' motto we will do a litter cleanup as we go.

Pioneer Park is easy to find!  The address is 3951 Madison Pike, Covington, KY 41017.  From I-275, take Exit 80 (Covington/Independence) and turn right off the ramp onto Madison Pike (KY Hwy. 17).  Go under the I-275 overpass and about one mile.  You'll see the park on your right before you come to the entrance.  Once inside the park, turn right and go to Shelterhouse 1.  See you there!

Call Kenton County Recreation at (859) 525-PLAY (7529) to see how you can help – we are always in need of volunteers and funding sponsors for our programs!
